The Guardian came out with a two part article called "Ten Rules for Writers". Various famous authors were interviewed. Overall, the three things a writer must carry with himself at all times are the same things that anyone should really carry with themselves at all times:
perseverance, humility, and love. I would also add humor to that list. My personal favorite quote comes from Hilary Mantel in Part Two:
"Be ready for anything. Each new story has different demands and may throw up reasons to break these and all other rules. Except number one: you can't give your soul to literature if you're thinking about income tax."
